A Day Off

I decided last week I would take Labor Day off, I haven't had one off in a long time and it was my first opportunity to have one off. Any way, I took some time today to change my blog layout, thanks to Beth Quick for the link, I really like the design of the blog. In other news I am going to be preparing a Revelation Bible Study. So tomorrow I am going to be reading several commentaries to get started. Besides all of this I'm still learning the rythm and roll of weekly preaching and all of that. I find that most of my time is taken up by sermon prep, and then the rest is by visitation and such. I'm still working on it and I plan on giving an up date in the future. Well that's all for now, I'm going to enjoy the rest of my day off :)

I am finishing a Revelation study using "Breaking the Code" by Bruce Metzger. It is 8-weeks and includes a dvd/video. It's worth a look.

Also...days off are not optional. They are good for you and the church.

Theology vs. Scripture

I've been doing some thinking. I've been apart of and have been watching the discussion taking place on Locust and Honey on the General conference. I did post some statements but recently a relatively short discussion on homosexuality has surfaced. Now this is a hot button issue for pretty much everyone but there were a few issues I had with the various points that were given, as well as some thoughts on what is happening in the church right now around this issue. First off, I was struck by the insistence that the church needs to be open and affirming. I am not making any claims on whether this is right or wrong but the church has never in its history been an "open and affirming" organization. This is just a statement of fact, and I find it quite interesting that most people claim that the Methodist church needs to be open and affirming when I believe that John Wesley would not have been. Scripture: 1 Kings 19:1-13 Central Verse: “…but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.
