Food for thought: (Questions about the text)

The ending of the Gospel is a common form of ending, giving respect to all the information that doesn't make it into the written word.

The disciples were back fishing, this may have been a sign that they were giving up on their mission. But Jesus appears to call them back to it.

Jesus asks Peter to take care of his sheep three times, this may be a way of giving Peter forgiveness for denying him three times.

Connections: (Time with Our Society)

Why doesn't God speak to me? Why doesn't God speak today? These are questions that I've had to face quite often as a pastor. Usually its someone who is upset about something and there is honestly no answer to give. When I reflect on the last chapter of John the final verse really reaches out and grabs me, in part because I believe it is an answer to these types of questions.

I wish the biblical authors wrote down everything that Jesus did. It seems kind of important to me that we would know everything that Jesus said and did. Yet this give us an opportunity to realize that God continues to speak. It doesn't always get written down but it leave the opportunity for us to hear a fresh word from God. The operative of that is hear from God. We have to listen in order to hear what God would say to us. What has God said to you through the study of John?
